8/1 St. Augustine

Got a suprise go ahead and go fishing “Again” from the wife, not sure whats instore for me yet but I went. Did a little solo mission today and headed back to St. Aug and hit the mud flats. Action was slow, I got there midway through the outgoing tide. I sat and waited as the tide emptied out and got on my first red at 20″, waited again for the tide to change and start rising back in the flats and followed I the tide in. Within the fist 10 min I was on and then on again, and even doubled up once ( this is really hard to land solo) and suprisingly pulled it off. had a great day, lots of mid to upper slots feeding heavy on the early incoming!redfishredfishredfish

Juvi Time! 07/31/2010

Woke up early Saturday morning to take out my Gheenoe for the first time. No I am not going to stop kayak fishing this is mainly for scouting locations and to go a little further than the kayak can. We started out with Top Water and Miguel landed a little Trout within his first cast! After a few more blow ups we netted some bait and headed to Tarpon Territory . Miguel was manning the Trolling motor and we saw some rolls in the distance and sped up towards them. There is a saying that goes on for every one roller there is a few underneath it, I don’t know how true it is but it’s something you may want to pass along. We got into position and saw one roll 20ft in front of us and both of us took a cast in front of his roll and about 2 feet from each other. Next thing I know my Popping cork goes down I reel in way to much slack (I was way too excited) and set the hook! My Drag was screaming then I knew the famous jump was coming. I took my bow reeled in the slack and he was still on  After a few more jumps and runs this Tarpon (estimated around 20lb’s) came boat side and Miguel took the honors and landed him for me! We were in a small creek and the Tarpon got smart and stayed away from us and got a little nervous so we couldn’t get anymore hook ups for the day :(.

7/25

As you can tell from the lack of our posts fishing has been quite slow for us at YakAngling.com but today turned out to be a great day. Lou, JP and myself decided to switch it up a bit and hit a spot down south of us for some Tarpon action. We get out and see dolphins just engorging bait pods, I have never seen dolphins feed like this but was very cool to watch. We traveled down a creek and start seeing nothing but Tarpon and Gars rolling. I have never witnessed this so this was really cool for me. Lou gets on first with a Gar and a nice one at that. JP and I continue to pitch at the rolling fish to no avail. After and hour or so we run out of bait and need to net some more. I found a small school of mullet to get us started and BAM MY FIRST TARPON is on! Well this lasted about 15 sec and 4 jumps and head shakes later and now I am off my first tarpon. Anyways I may have found my new love and its in the color of silver. Lou landed one more BIG gar and nothing else for the rest of the team. I then proceeded to finish the rest of the day with my son and wife at the beach, cant ask for more and what an awesome time! Here are some pics.

Skinny Water Red Fishing

The alarm when off at 4:45am and after a couple Snoozes it was time to get on the move. Hit the water a little after 6 and saw bait everywhere, not only did I see it, a lot of it was getting hammered. I threw my Top water for a few minutes and after a few blow ups and no takers I decided to net some bait and hit the Flats! After a few cast of the net I had which I thought would be enough bait for the day. I hit the Flats and threw some Top Water in search of reds but not even a blow up :(. Once the tide really started flushing I switched to a small Live Mullet on a Jig, took a cast in front of the school and waited… well not long and I was hooked up

Skinny Water RedsI said OK, not a bad start the school got a little spooked but they came back where they were really quick and took another cast then another Mid Slot Red to the boat.

Put another mullet out and a few minutes later, fish on.

And Again…

Now at this time I ran out of Mullet and the tide was getting really really low and I realized it was too late I was stuck lol. Saw a lot more reds in literally inches of water just chilling out skipping on the surface then digging in the mud. Don’t believe me check out this photo.

After a couple hours of waiting and waiting the income finally started rushing in. I wanted to go home but I said I was here this long lets take some cast with a Fishbites Paddletail and had a few more lower to mid slot’s red eat. At this point I already had my camera’s packed up so sorry no more pictures :(. I lost my jig to an oyster and decided to try a DOA Shrimp and 2 cast later another Mid Slod Red wanted to eat :)! On the way out on my paddling breaks, I found a school of rat reds who took over a hole. I caught a few and decided it was getting way to hot and time to go home!

Quick Trip Saturday 07/03

I watched the weather carefully this morning between 3 websites and the radar and decided to go to the launch and see how it looked. It was cloudy but I didn’t see any cumulus clouds yet and the sun was trying to peak threw so I decided to set sail around 6:30.

Decided to paddle right to the flat instead of doing my normal routine of working the creeks and holes on the way. The tide was still pretty high and the Reds seem to be eating better at the lower end of the tides. I worked this flat a little different than normal and it payed off! I fan casted a Top Water in an area I know the Reds use as a passage way, had quite a few blow ups until this guy decided to eat my Natural Mullet like skitterwalk.

He was in the upper slot and put up a great fight.

After a lot more blow ups and no takers I switched to another favorite lure the Mirrodine. Within minutes of using it I was hooked up! Another Red this one was mid slot and didn’t know he was hooked until he got to the boat and then took off real fast. After a short fight he got to the boat and gave me the eye :cyclopsani:

I was only fishing for about an hour until the cumulus clouds starting showing up and I decided to play it safe and take the paddle back home! Hopefully tomorrow and Monday will bring better weather!

Tight Lines.

Inshore 5/22

Miguel and myself hit the water around 6:15 throwing top water. We had a lot of blow up’s and followers but no takers today :( . Since the tide was pretty high we went searching for some new spots on one of the flats we fish. There was some good potential and had a few more blow ups but the tide was pretty slack so nothing was eating. We finally arrived at one of our honey holes and caught 2 flounder.

We moved to another hole with no success, then Miguel says “Lou watch my Kayak, I am going to try something” 5 minutes late Miguel screams out “I’m on.” He catches a 22″ Red in a few cast in a spot we go by every time we fish and just never fished it.

I of course ran over to fish were he was while he has bagging the fish. I managed a Red in a few cast probably around 18″. So we decided to get our gear and kayaks and explore this area a little better. We managed 2 more reds in a few minutes then decided to call it a day. All fish were caught on Slayer Jig’s and Pearl Fishbites Paddle Tales.

Evening 5/19

Miguel, his friend Brent and myself got out for a couple hours this evening in search of some Reds. We started of throwing some Jig’s and Fishbites combo and caught some Lady Fish before we moved out onto the flats. Once the tide started pushing out the bite started to turn on.

I started it out with this Upper Slot Red that was nice and fat.

Then Mike had to out do me of course with this Over Slot pig!

Brent got the Skunk, but it was his first time fishing from a kayak and now he is hooked!

Flounder?

It’s that time of year were Flounder are making their way back in from the ocean.  It seems to be a little late this year with the cold winter but they are arriving!  We like to use 1/4 Slayer Inc Jig and a Fishbites Paddle tail slowly bounced on the bottom.  Look for hard bottom drop offs, a flushing point of water off a flat is a great ambush point for Flounder as well.  Don’t be expecting people to give up their Flounder Spots, these spots are pretty tightly guarded secret’s and Anglers usually don’t tell fellow anglers!  Take your time when fishing for flounder cover a lot of ground, and even cast were you wouldn’t expect a fish to be because you never know where the flounder will be laying.  Remember Flounder are lazy and ambush their pray and like to suck on their food and take it back down where they were laying to eat; So give them some time before setting the hook.

Quick Evening 5.12.10

Lou and I went out this evening in search of some reds for the 321 slam this month. The evening started slow with some ladyfish on Fishbites paddle-tails as we drifted through the creeks with the incoming tide. We moved to one of our honey holes and began throwing topwater plugs. The ladyfish struck again and crushed the new Bonga Minnow by Sebile. We thought the night was lost when this bad boy started peeling drag! FISH ON! on the other end of the line is this nice 28″ Red! All of a sudden Lou’s line takes off and once again FISH ON! but this time the fish takes off, the drag is screaming and Lou is making no progress with this monster then SNAP he gets cut off…. It was a great evening on the water with lots of action!

Pre-Tourney Slam

Miguel and I got out this morning for some last pre-tourney fishing. We started off with Top water, but didn’t get anything on them and decided to move on. We found one of the creeks mouth we usually fish and started throwing arti’s looking for Reds. We started off with a couple small Reds a piece. Then Miguel landed a couple nice Flatties at the end of the outgoing! We moved and found some trout who wanted to play! Then ended the day with another Flattie! All Fish were caught on Pearl Fishbites Paddle Tails!
